Pterostoma hirsutus was named by Hill and Pole (1994) [Holotype, scanning electron microscope stub.
Other specimens examined: S-282, SB-681, 682, 807, 808 (light microscope slides).
Type locality: The 0 m level of the Cool Store section at Regatta Point, Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania, Australia.]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Holotype: S-283, housed in the Department of Plant Science, University of Tasmania., a cuticle, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Regatta Point - Cool Store mud, which is in an Eocene fluvial-deltaic mudstone in Australia.
