Eunectes antiquus was named by Oustalet (1870). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Corent (MNHN collection), which is in a Rupelian lacustrine - large marl in France.
It was recombined as Eretes antiquus by Nilsson (2001), Miller (2002).
