Ripogonum tasmanicum was named by Conran et al. (2009) [Microscope cuticle slides and SEM stubs stored in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Adelaide. Paratype: Specimen LO115 (University of Tasmania); Cuticle LO115a held at University of Adelaide.]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Holotype: Specimen LR42 stored in the School of Plant Science, University of Tasmania., a leaf (Cuticle), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Lowana Road - Macquarie Harbour, which is in an Eocene estuary/bay mudstone in the Macquarie Harbor Formation of Australia.
