Persoonieaephyllum was named by Carpenter et al. (2010) [Type locality: Newvale Mine, Waimumu Coalfield, Southland. Site registered as F45/f0394 in the New Zealand Fossil Record File administered by the Geological Society of New Zealand. The NZ Map Grid reference on Infomap series is NZMS 260 F45/817434 (46.1427S, 168.7518E).]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Persoonieaephyllum ornatum.

It was assigned to Proteaceae by Carpenter et al. (2010).

R. J. Carpenter et al. 2010Proteaceous leaf material with broad, mostly parallel-aligned, brachyparacytic stomatal complexes. Stomata large, guard cells typically greater than 50 mm long. Cuticular extensions between epidermal-cell anticlinal walls undulate to sinuous, not straight with angular junctions. Trichome bases associated with up to four epidermal cells. Venation, where known, with more or less parallel-aligned major veins and numerous higher-order interconnecting veins.
