Taxonomy

Apiariae was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant.

It was corrected as Apidae by Cockerell (1908), Pongrácz (1931), Zeuner and Manning (1976), Hong (1984), Hong and Wang (1985), Carpenter (1992), Brothers (1999), Engel (2001), Wappler (2003), Sharkey (2007), Engel et al. (2012), Sann et al. (2018) and Engel (2021).

It was assigned to Nemoglossata by Latreille (1802); to Hymenoptera by Pongrácz (1931); to Tenthredinoidea by Hong (1984); to Apocrita by Carpenter (1992); to Apoidea by Cockerell (1908), Zeuner and Manning (1976), Hong and Wang (1985), Brothers (1999), Engel (2001), Wappler (2003) and Sharkey (2007); and to Anthophila by Engel et al. (2012), Sann et al. (2018) and Engel (2021).

Synonyms

Bombus grandaevus was named by Heer (1849). It is an impression. Its type locality is Radoboj (unspecified or Heer coll), which is in a Sarmatian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal limestone in Croatia.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Zeuner and Manning (1976).
Apis aquitaniensis was named by de Rilly (1930). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Musem Marseille 5979, an exoskeleton.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Zeuner and Manning (1976).
Apis dormitans was named by von Heyden (1862). Its type specimen is BMNH 58778, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Rott (Krantz Bonn coll), which is in a MP 30 lacustrine - large shale in the Rott Formation of Germany.

It was recombined as Synapis dormitans by Statz (1931); it was considered a nomen dubium by Zeuner and Manning (1976).
Apis styriaca was named by Pongrácz (1931). It is a compression fossil.

It was considered a nomen nudum by Zeuner and Manning (1976).
Bombus carbonarius was named by Menge (1856). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Baltic Amber, Danziger Naturkundemuseum Menge collection, which is in a Priabonian terrestrial amber in Poland.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Zeuner and Manning (1976); it was considered a nomen dubium by Engel (2001).
Bombus muscorum was named by Roussy (1937). It is not extant.

Bombusoides mengei was named by Motschulsky (1856). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Baltic Amber, Danziger Naturkundemuseum Menge collection, which is in a Priabonian terrestrial amber in Poland.

Apis catanensis was named by Roussy (1960). It is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Sicilian amber (Avolio coll), which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Italy.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Engel (1999).
