Taxonomy
Mesoptilus carpenteri was named by Guan et al. (2016). Its type specimen is MCZ 11253, a forewing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Elmo, MCZ post-1950 collection, which is in an Artinskian pond limestone in the Wellington Formation of Kansas.
