Cuspilongus was named by Archibald and Rasnitsyn (2015). Its type is Cuspilongus cachecreekensis. It is the type genus of Cuspilonginae.
It was assigned to Cephinae by Archibald and Rasnitsyn (2015); and to Cuspilonginae by Kopylov and Rasnitsyn (2016), Archibald et al. (2018).
