R. La Perna 2016One of the living species  Europicardium serrulatum (Deshayes, 1855)  is strikingly similar to E. polycolpatum. It is a poorly known species, currently synonymized with Cardium kobelti Maltzan, 1885 (Fischer-Piette 1977; Hylleberg 2004). Judging from the available bibliographical data (e.g. Deshayes 1855, p. 330; Maltzan 1885, pp. 29, 30; Fischer-Piette 1977, p. 51, pl. 4, fig. 2ad; Huber 2010, unnumbered figure on p. 291), E. serrulatum is a small species, commonly not exceeding 25 mm in length. The only appreciable difference concerns the shape, which is slightly higher than in similarly sized specimens of E. polycolpatum. In other words, E. serrulatum is more similar in shape to the adults of E. polycolpatum larger than 30 mm, in spite of its smaller size. The palaeobiogeographical history of Europicardium, discussed below, could support the hypothesis of conspecificity between E. serrulatum and E. polycolpatum, but further studies on the living species would be useful to clarify the status of both species, admittedly widely separated geographically and chronologically.
