Taxonomy
Pliauchenia (Megatylopus) gigas was named by Matthew and Cook (1909) [genotype]. Its type specimen is AMNH 14071, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Megatylopus.
It was recombined as Paracamelus gigas by Matthew and Stirton (1930) and Cook and Cook (1933); it was replaced with Paracamelus brevirostris by Macdonald (1959); it was recombined as Megatylopus gigas by Gregory (1939), Webb (1965), Patton (1969), Harrison (1985) and Honey et al. (1998).
