Amphicyon minor was named by Dehm (1935). Its type specimen is Slg. München 1934 V 6 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Gunzenheim, which is in an Oligocene terrestrial horizon in Germany.
It was recombined as Goupilictis minor by Ginsburg (1969), de Bonis (2015).
