Taxonomy
Whiteia was named by Moy-Thomas (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Indu-u]. It is the type genus of Whiteiidae.
It was assigned to Coelacanthidae by Moy-Thomas (1935), Lehman (1952) and Beltan (1968); to Coelacanthiidae by Schaeffer and Mangus (1976); to Coelacanthiformes by Forey (1998); to Coelocanthiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Whiteiidae by Schultze (2004), Arratia and Schultze (2015) and Yabumoto and Brito (2016).
