Pogonias was named by Lacépède (1802) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R]. It is extant. Its type is Pogonias cromis.
It was assigned to Sciaenoidei by Fitch and Lavenberg (1983) and Purdy et al. (2001); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Sciaenidae by Hay (1902), Cione et al. (2000), Fierstine et al. (2012), Hastings and Dooley (2017) and Carnevale and Godfrey (2018); and to Sciaenidae by Cicimurri et al. (2022).
It was assigned to Sciaenoidei by Fitch and Lavenberg (1983) and Purdy et al. (2001); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Sciaenidae by Hay (1902), Cione et al. (2000), Fierstine et al.
