Cybistrini was named by Sharp (1880). It is extant.

It was corrected as Cybisterini by Bouchard et al. (2011); it was reranked as the subfamily Cybisterinae by Cai et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Dytiscinae by Nilsson (2001), Bouchard et al. (2011); and to Dytiscidae by Cai et al. (2022).
