Palaeotringa was named by Marsh (1870) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Palaeotringa littoralis.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Cracraft (1972).

It was assigned to Grallae by Marsh (1870); to Scolopacidae by Zittel (1890) and Hay (1902); to Tringinae by Hay (1930); to Laridae by Lambrecht (1933); to Palaeotringinae by Wetmore (1940) and Wetmore (1956); to Graculavidae by Olson and Parris (1987); and to Charadriiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
