Taxonomy
Sterna nigra was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Chlidonias.
It was recombined as Hydrochelidon nigra by Shufeldt (1891) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Chlidonias nigra by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940) and Howard (1946); it was recombined as Chlidonias niger by Wetmore (1956) and Clements et al. (2017).
