Taxonomy
Monachopsis was named by Kretzoi (1941) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Monachopsis pontica.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Rule and Park (2024).

It was assigned to Monachina by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Phocinina by Koretsky (2001); to Carnivora by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phocinae by Koretsky (1991), Koretsky and Barnes (2006), Berta (2017), Otriazhyi et al. (2025).
