Taxonomy
Larus sabini was named by Sabine (1819). It is extant. It is the type species of Xema.

It was recombined as Xema sabinii by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Xema sabini by Coues (1862), Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Clements et al. (2017).
