Stellispongia was named by d'Orbigny (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u J Oxfo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Stellispongiinae, Stellispongiidae.
It was assigned to Pharetronida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stellispongiinae by Finks et al. (2004).
