Taxonomy
Larus utunui was named by Steadman (2002). Its type specimen is DAPT 1, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Fa'ahia site, Huahine, which is in a Holocene lagoonal sandstone in French Polynesia.
