Olenellus mickwitzi was named by Schmidt (1888). It is the type species of Schmidtiellus.
It was recombined as Elliptocephalus (Schmidtia) mickwitzi by Marcou (1890); it was recombined as Olenellus (Mesonacis) mickwitzi by Walcott (1891) and French (1897); it was recombined as Schmidtia mickwitzi by Moberg (1899); it was recombined as Mesonacis mickwitziae by Walcott (1910); it was misspelled as Mesonacis mickwitziae by Peach (1894); it was recombined as Schmidtiellus mickwitzi by Moberg and Sergerberg (1906), Palmer and Repina (1993) and Lieberman (1999).
