Trichopezinae was named by Vaillant (1981). It is extant. Its type is Trichopeza.

It was reranked as the tribe Trichopezini by Wahlberg and Johanson (2018).

It was assigned to Empedidae by Grimaldi and Cumming (1999); to Brachystomatidae by Sinclair and Cumming (2006) and Sinclair et al. (2011); and to Brachystomatinae by Wahlberg and Johanson (2018).
