Araeoscelidae was named by Williston (1910). It is the type family of Araeoscelida.

It was corrected as Araeoscelididae by Nopcsa (1928).

It was assigned to Araeosceloidea by Nopcsa (1928); to Araeoscelomorphi by Hay (1930); to Araeoscelidia by Kuhn (1946); to Protorosauria by Haughton and Brink (1954); to Captorhinomorpha by Carroll (1969); to Araeoscelidia by Kuhn (1966) and Brinkman et al. (1984); to Araeoscelida by Carroll (1988); and to Araeoscelidia by Laurin (1991).
