Pyrrhocorides was named by Amyot and Audinet-Serville (1843). It is extant. Its type is Pyrrhocoris.

It was corrected as Pyrrhocoridae by Scudder (1890), Kerzhner (2001), Cassis and Schuh (2010), Szwedo (2018).

It was assigned to Pentatomomorpha by Scudder (1890); to Lygaeoidea by Cassis and Schuh (2010); and to Pyrrhocoroidea by Kerzhner (2001), Szwedo (2018).
