Ephutinae was named by Ashmead (1903). It is extant. Its type is Ephuta.

It was reranked as the subtribe Ephutina by Brothers and Lelej (2017); it was reranked as the tribe Ephutini by Brothers (2003) and Waldren et al. (2023).

It was assigned to Mutillidae by Ashmead (1903); to Mutillinae by Brothers (2003); to Mutillini by Brothers and Lelej (2017); and to Sphaeropthalminae by Waldren et al. (2023).
