Prionessus was named by Matthew and Granger (1925). Its type is Prionessus lucifer.
It was assigned to Plagiaulacidae by Matthew and Granger (1925); to Taeniolabididae by Matthew et al. (1929), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum (2001); to Taeniolabidoidea by Mao et al. (2016); and to Lambdopsalidae by Williamson et al. (2016).
