Taxonomy
Promephitis majori was named by Pilgrim (1933). Its type specimen is AMNH 20585, a skull (skull and mandible), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Samos Quarry I, which is in a Messinian terrestrial horizon in Greece.
