Taxonomy

Protodidelphis was named by Paula Couto (1952). Its type is Protodidelphis vanzolinii.

It was assigned to Didelphinae by Paula Couto (1952); to Didelphidae by Carroll (1988); to Didelphimorphia by Goin et al. (2006); and to Protodidelphidae by Ladaveze and Muizon (2010) and Oliveira and Goin (2011).
