Taxonomy
Canis lupus variabilis was named by Pei (1934).

It was recombined as Canis variabilis by Teilhard de Chardin and Pei (1941), Sotnikova (2001), Wang et al. (2008) and Tedford et al. (2009); it was recombined as Canis mosbachensis variabilis by Jiangzuo et al. (2018).
