Notharctus was named by Leidy (1870).

It was assigned to Solidungula by Leidy (1873); to Pseudolemuridae by Schlosser (1877); to Limnotheriidae by Hay (1902); to Notharctidae by Osborn (1902); to Notharctinae by Simpson (1940), Gingerich (1975), Gingerich (1979); to Notharctinae by Franzen (1994); and to Adapidae by Leidy (1870), McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Omnivora by Leidy (1873); to Pseudolemuridae by Schlosser (1877); and to Limnotheriidae by Hay (1902).
Limnotherium was named by Marsh (1871). It is the type genus of Limnotheriidae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Notharctus by Leidy (1872), Cope (1873), Matthew (1899), Osborn (1902), Matthew (1909), Granger and Gregory (1917), Gregory (1920), Troxell (1926), Gazin (1958), Van Valen (1966), Gingerich (1979).

It was assigned to Limnotheriidae by Hay (1902).
Pelycodus relictus was named by Gregory (1917).

It was synonymized subjectively with Notharctus gracilis by Robinson (1957); it was synonymized subjectively with Smilodectes gracilis by Gazin (1958); it was considered a nomen nudum by Gingerich (1979).
Telmalestes was named by Marsh (1872).

It was replaced with Telmatolestes by Marsh (1873); it was synonymized subjectively with Notharctus by Granger (1902), Granger and Gregory (1917), Troxell (1926), Gazin (1958), Van Valen (1966), Gingerich (1979).

It was assigned to Limnotheriidae by Hay (1902).
Thinolestes was named by Marsh (1872).
