Pronycticebus was named by Grandidier (1904). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Adapinae by Simpson (1940), Hooker (1986); to Cercamoniinae by Franzen (1994); to Adapidae by Szalay (1971), Gingerich (1980), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Pronycticebinae by Godinot (1998).
