Trogolemur was named by Matthew (1909). Its type is Trogolemur myodes.

It was assigned to Plesiadapidae by Matthew (1917), Hay (1930); to Primates by Simpson (1940); to Anaptomorphidae by Robinson (1968); to Omomyidae by Matthew (1909), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Trogolemurini by Szalay (1976), Muldoon and Gunnell (2002), Gunnell and Rose (2002); and to Anaptomorphinae by Dawson and Constenius (2018).
