Canimartes was named by Cope (1892). Its type is Canimartes cumminsii.

It was assigned to Caninae by Hay (1902); to Grisoninae by Kurten and Anderson (1980); to Mustelidae by Cope (1893) and Carroll (1988); and to Ischyrictini by Baskin (1998).
