Limnonyx was named by Crusafont Pairo (1950) [type L. sinerizi from Spain]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Mustelidae by Crusafont Pairo (1950) and Carroll (1988); to Aonyxini by Willemsen (1992); to Lutrini by Baskin (1998); and to Aonychini by Pickford (2007).
