Temnocyon was named by Cope (1878). Its type is Temnocyon altigenis.
It was assigned to Canidae by Wortman and Matthew (1899); to Caninae by Hay (1902); to Amphicyonidae by Cope (1879) and Carroll (1988); and to Temnocyoninae by Hunt (1998) and Hunt (2011).
