Indarctos was named by Pilgrim (1913) [type Indian I. salmontanus]. Its type is Indarctos salmontanus.
It was assigned to Ursavini by Hunt (1998); to Ursidae by Pilgrim (1913), Carroll (1988), Salesa et al. (2006), Werdelin and Peigne (2010); and to Agriotheriini by Chorn and Hoffman (1978), Jiangzuo et al. (2023).
