Taxonomy
Marmota was named by Frisch (1775) [type European Mus marmorata Linnaeus; also said to be Blumenbach 1779, on argument that Frisch names are unavailable: see Hall 1981]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Marmotinae by Frase and Hoffmann (1980); to Marmotini by Mercer and Roth (2003), Helgen et al. (2009); and to Sciuridae by Frisch (1775), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wilson (1967), Kurten and Anderson (1980), McKenna and Bell (1997), Eshelman et al. (2025).
It was assigned to Marmotinae by Frase and Hoffmann (1980); to Marmotini by Mercer and Roth (2003), Helgen et al. (2009); and to Sciuridae by Frisch (1775), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wilson (1967), Kurten and Anderson (1980), McKenna and Bell (1997), Eshelman et al. (2025).
