Taxonomy
Geomys was named by Rafinesque (1817). It is extant. It is the type genus of Geomyidae.

It was assigned to Pseudotomina by Gray (1825); and to Geomyidae by Rafinesque (1817), Hay (1902), Kurten and Anderson (1980), McKenna and Bell (1997).
