Prolimulus was named by Fritsch (1899). Its type is Prolimulus woodwardi.
It was assigned to Liomesaspididae by Størmer (1955) and Bergström (1975); and to Belinuridae by Lamsdell (2016), Lamsdell (2020) and Dunlop et al. (2020).
