Derivation of name. The specific epithet elpidophoros is derived from two ancient Greek words, (elps), which means hope, and the suffix - (-phoros, adverb of , "to bear"), which means bearing, in memorial to the macroevolutionary model of Richard B. Goldschmidt usually known as the Hopeful Monster.
Taxonomy
Teratopithecus elpidophoros was named by López et al. (2020). Its type specimen is LIEB-PV 1627, a maxilla (partial right maxilla with P3- M2), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Laguna Fría, which is in a Lutetian terrestrial tuff in Argentina. It is the type species of Teratopithecus.

Further differs from Archaeopithecus rogeri Ameghino, 1897 in the presence of a less marked groove in the lingual face of the protocone on P3-4, M1-2 with protocone and hypocone of equal size and lingually aligned, and relatively low-crowned cheek teeth. |
