Apheliscus was named by Cope (1875). It is not extant. Its type is Prototomus insidiosus. It is the type genus of Apheliscidae.
It was assigned to Mioclaenidae by Cope (1875); to Pseudolemuridae by Schlosser (1877); to Limnotheriidae by Hay (1902); to Apheliscinae by Archibald (1998) and Zack et al. (2005); and to Apheliscidae by Hay (1930) and Hooker and Russell (2012).
