Taxonomy
Felis atrox was named by Leidy (1853). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Uncia atrox by Cope (1880); it was recombined as Panthera atrox by Simpson (1941), Hibbard and Taylor (1960), Lundelius (1972); it was synonymized subjectively with Panthera leo by Kurten and Anderson (1980); it was recombined as Panthera leo atrox by Barnett et al. (2009).
