Named originally as a variation of Testudo kalksburgensis Toula
Taxonomy
Testudo steinheimensis was named by Staesche (1931). Its type specimen is (not specified), a partial shell (carapace parts from Tubingen and Stuttgart collections), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Steinheim am Albuch, which is in a MN 7 + 8 lacustrine - small siliciclastic/limestone in Germany.
