V. L. De Pietri and G. Mayr 2012 | Medium-sized bird, larger than Elo- rius paludicola, with hindlimbs only slightly longer than those of Tringa totanus, albeit with stoutness compared to that of Numenius arquata. Matches Elorius paludicola in all features of the tarsometatarsus. Differs from Elorius paludicola in tibiotarsus with (1) tuberculum retinaculi fibularis not as marked (Fig. 4G), (2) inconspicuous epic-
ondylus medialis (Fig. 4G), and (3) small distal opening of sulcus extensorius (Fig. 4G). Differs from the middle Miocene Numenius antiquus in (1) greater width of proxi- mal end of tarsometatarsus (8.3 mm vs. 7 mm), (2) barely notched lateral rim of hypotarsus, adjacent to co- tyla lateralis (Fig. 4N–O, compare with P) and (3) hypo- tarsus not enclosing a canal (Fig. 4P). |
