It was assigned to Anthracotheriidae by Pilgrim (1940); to Dichobunidae by Dehm and Oettingen-Spielberg (1958); to Moeritheriidae by West (1980); to Proboscidea by Shoshani and Tassy (1996); to Tethytheria by Shoshani and Tassy (2005); and to Anthracobunidae by Carroll (1988), Kumar (1991), McKenna and Bell (1997), Rose et al. (2014), Cooper et al. (2014), Rose et al. (2020).
