Taxonomy

Stegomastodon was named by Pohlig (1912). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Cuvieroniini by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Anancinae by Zurita et al. (2004); to Cuvieroniinae by Shoshani and Tassy (1996), Shoshani and Tassy (2005); and to Gomphotheriidae by Pohlig (1912), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Carroll (1988), Lambert and Shoshani (1998), Salles et al. (2006).

S. aftoniae, S. brasiliensis, S. chapmani (syn. Mastodon chapmani), S. mirificus (syn. Mastodon successor, S. rexroadensis, S. arizonae, S. texanus), S. nebrascensis, S. primitivus

Synonyms

Rhabdobunus was named by Hay (1914). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Tetralophodon by Osborn (1918); it was synonymized subjectively with Stegomastodon by Matthew (1918), Osborn (1924), Lambert and Shoshani (1998).
