Taxonomy
Venus (Mercenaria) varians was named by Gabb (1864). Its type specimen is ANSP 4383 (lectotype) and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Chione varians by Waring (1917); it was recombined as Aphrodina varians by Stewart (1930), Hoots (1931); it was recombined as Calva varians by Popenoe (1937); it was recombined as Trigonocallista varians by Taff et al. (1940); it was recombined as Calva (Calva) varians by Saul and Popenoe (1992).
