Medistylus was named by Stirton (1952). It is not extant. Its type is Phanophilus dorsatus.

It was assigned to Interatheriidae by Carroll (1988); to Pachyrukhinae by Reguero et al. (2007) and Seoane et al. (2017); and to Pachyrukhinae by Seoane et al. (2023).
