Dasypus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Dasypodoidea, Dasipidae, Dasypodinae.
It was assigned to Bestiae by Linnaeus (1758); to Dasypina by Gray (1825); to Dasypidae by Ameghino (1902), Rovereto (1914); to Dasypodinae by Lydekker (1894), Hay (1930), Kurten and Anderson (1980); to Dasypodidae by Carroll (1988), Downing and White (1995), McDonald and Naples (2007); and to Dasypodini by McKenna and Bell (1997), Rincón et al. (2008), Alfonso-Rojas et al. (2021).
