Ethmiidae was named by Busck (1909). It is extant. Its type is Ethmia.

It was reranked as the subfamily Ethmiinae by Sohn et al. (2012), Heikkilä et al. (2013).

It was assigned to Elachistidae by Sohn et al. (2012); and to Depressariidae by Heikkilä et al. (2013).
