Bathyurus armatus was named by Billings (1860). Its type specimen is Nat. Mus. Canada 863, a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Plethopeltis armatus by Raymond (1913); it was recombined as Plethometopus armatus by Ulrich (1930) and Rasetti (1944).
